Shopping for Car Insurance Guide Gives Valuable Tips

December 7, 1998 (TORONTO, Ont.) The new Shopping for Car Insurance guide released today by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) will help consumers make better informed choices about auto insurance by comparing insurers' claims service as well as price.

The 40-page booklet includes auto insurance rate profiles, a consumer claims satisfaction chart, and a list of Ontario's auto insurers. It also explains how car insurance works, what insurance coverage is mandatory and what is optional, how rates are set, and gives tips on insurance discounts.

"Buying car insurance is a key decision for consumers. This guide empowers consumers by providing important information to consider when making that decision," said Dina Palozzi, Chief Executive Officer & Superintendent of FSCO.

The claims satisfaction chart -- Ontario's first -- indicates that overall, consumers are satisfied with the way auto insurers handled their claims. These results can also help insurers improve their claims service. The guide's satisfaction chart and list of insurers will be updated annually and the rate profiles updated quarterly.

Shopping for Car Insurance is available on FSCO's website at www.fsco.gov.on.ca, by calling 1-800-263-7965 (English) or 1-800-668-5821 (French) during business hours, or by fax at (905) 436-4445.
